What is mint authority on Solana?
Also called: Mint authority enabled, Revoked mint
The account allowed to create new units of a token. If it is still set, someone can increase the supply at any time; if it is revoked, the supply is fixed.
Every token on Solana is a mint account, and the mint account names one authority that may issue new tokens. When a project revokes it, the field is set to nothing and the supply can never grow again. Nobody can undo a revocation.
If the authority is still set, whoever holds that key can create any number of new tokens and sell them into the pool. Each new token dilutes existing holders, and a large mint followed by a sale can take the price close to zero.
There are legitimate reasons to keep it. Stablecoins like USDC, liquid-staking tokens and tokenised stocks such as xStocks mint on deposit and burn on redemption, so their issuers keep the authority by design.
Why it matters before you trade
For a memecoin or community token there is rarely a good reason to keep mint authority after launch. If it is still enabled, you are trusting an anonymous key holder not to print. Revoked mint authority is one of the first things to check.
How NAVI shows it
Mint authority is the first check in the rug check on every token page. It shows Revoked (pass) or Active (fail). For tokens from known regulated issuers, matched by mint address rather than name, it shows Active (issuer) as a warning, because the risk there is the issuer and custody, not a rug.
Related terms
- Freeze authorityThe account allowed to freeze any holder's token account, which stops that wallet from selling or moving the token until it is thawed.
- Mutable metadataA token whose name, symbol, image or links can still be changed, because the metadata's update authority has not been removed.
- xStocksTokens issued by Backed (acquired by Kraken) that track US stocks and ETFs, such as AAPLx or SPYx, and trade on Solana around the clock.
