What are Token-2022 extensions (transfer fee, permanent delegate)?
Also called: Token-2022, Token Extensions, Transfer fee, Permanent delegate
Optional features of Solana's newer token program. Some, such as transfer fees and a permanent delegate, give the issuer ongoing control over holders' tokens.
Solana has two token programs: the original SPL Token program and Token-2022 (also called Token Extensions). Token-2022 adds optional extensions a mint can switch on when it is created. Most are harmless, such as on-chain metadata.
Two matter most for traders. A transfer fee takes a percentage of every transfer, including your sale, and the issuer can set it high. A permanent delegate is an authority that can transfer or burn tokens from any holder's account without their signature. Regulated issuers use it for compliance: xStocks set a permanent delegate held by their issuer so they can meet legal orders.
Why it matters before you trade
On a token from a known, regulated issuer these extensions are part of the product and the risk is the issuer. On an anonymous token, a permanent delegate means someone can take your tokens, and a high transfer fee can turn it into a honeypot. Check which extensions a mint uses before buying anything unfamiliar on Token-2022.
